5Great nature activity for camping, hiking, and backyard play...  Aug 17, 2011 By daughternature "daughternature"
I bought this as a stocking stuffer a few years ago for my daughter who was 10. I actually bought 3 other fundanas (Bug Bingo, Biodiversity, and Nature Quest) as well. They are a very unique item for anyone who loves the outdoors and I like that they are educational too. My daughter wanted to play with these the same day she received them and still gets them out 3 years later for something to do. We take them with us camping, hiking, and just when we want something to do in our backyard.

Each square has you looking for something different that you will find among trees. Examples are a cone from an evergreen, moss growing on a tree, alternate branches, sign of an insect, a simple leaf, lichen, etc. For things like simple leaf, evergreen, compound leaf, and deciduous tree there are simple definitions in the square so you know what those terms mean. Directions for play are on the bandana but you can make your own rules as well. Sometimes we find the items in order as they are listed on the bandana. Sometimes we set the bandana down on a table and put pebbles on those we have found and keep looking for the objects until all squares have a pebble on them. Other times we race to see who will be first to find what is mentioned on the square.

They are great to wear as bandanas too. When we get hot we soak them with the hose or in a creek and wrap them around our head or neck to cool us off. They are so easy to tote around because you can just wear it on your head or tie it to your wrist. We can carry them in our backpack and they take up very little room. They've also been great to bundle the 4 corners to tie like a sack and carry things in. I have been very pleased with my fundanas. It encourages us to look at our surroundings and enjoy nature. I can't think of a better way to spend time together than being outdoors with your child.
