5Fun game, though the rules are somewhat ambiguous  Jul 09, 2008 By Matthew K. Morgan
I picked up this game recently when I was on travel and I found a copy in a gift shop. I picked it up because of the name and I thought it would make an excellent conversation piece. It has proven to be more than that for my family.

Morgan's Revenge is a form of gambling game, similar to craps though using a spinning top instead of a die. It's a game for groups, where everyone antes up and then each player takes turns spinning the top. How the top lands determines what action to take - put more in the pot, take some out, take all, etc. It's a lot of fun and even includes some "silver" pieces of eight and "gold" doubloons.

There are a couple of problems, though. First, the rules are not very clear. Apparently this is intentional, as the rules explain that you can make rules up as you go. Well, ok, but a good starting point would be to mention how much of an ante to start with... More of a problem though is the limited number of coins in the box. You get 6 pieces of eight and 6 doubloons, so even though the rules state that any number can play, there's not enough coinage to go around unless you add some. That's all right, though, since you can play with pennies, marbles, rocks - whatever. If you can find more tokens/coins, you're in fine shape to play. I disagree with the notion that any number can play, though, from a practial standpoint - if you have 10-12 people at the table, it's going to be a long, long game with some frustrated players. We play it with 4 and it seems to be about right, though I could see up to 6 without too many headaches.

The game is exceptionally durable. It comes in a metal tin, with a wodden block holder for all of the metal game pieces.

As for its educational value, there are some piratey things you can learn from the tin and from the booklet, though once you have read those there isn't much else. It was not meant as an educational game, though.

This is a fun game for groups, and it makes an interesting gift.

5A little history, and lots of fun  May 14, 2007 By carolyn campbell
I first saw this toy on a trip to the Virgin Islands - Unfortunately, I did not get the opportunity to purchase it - When I returned home, I asked a local toy store if they knew the toy since they had a lot of pirate games, etc. in the store. They gave me the name of the manufacturer (who only sold retail) and I ended up in Amazon.com. It was a rewarding experience from beginning to end - the game itself but also the efficient manner in which I received the package, etc. Thank you. The kids love it!!!!
